Q & A
What is my deadline to file my tax return?
Personal income tax returns must be filed by midnight, April 30. If you are self-employed, the deadline is June 15.
What happens if I'm late filing my income tax return?
If you're late but you don't owe any tax, there's no penalty. If you are late filing and you do owe income tax, Revenue Canada charges you 5% of the tax you owe plus daily interest on what you owe. To save the 5% penalty, file your return on time even if you can't pay the tax due. You'll still be paying interest that's compounded daily so this is a debt to settle as quickly as possible.
